A. You can never completely eliminate worms, only control them, the wormers kill the adult worms but not the eggs, in a couple of weeks, the eggs hatch and the cycle begins again. Call the vet and ask if there is something you can get OTC. It is TAPEWORM! Rice-like segments in the stool or caught in the fur under the tail. They can get tapeworm not just from fleas but mice and raw meat! The eggs can be brought in on shoes! You need to go to the vet to get medication to treat it, typical wormers won't kill tapeworm.

How to administer this kitty medicine?
Q. I was at the vet today and didn't even think about the fact that I wasn't sure how to give this dewormer medicine I've got. And I would call the vet, but they're closed for another hour for lunch, so if I don't get an answer here within the hour I'll call, but just thought I'd check here first. The medicine is pyrantel pamoate dewormer and it's in a syringe with no needle. I'm assuming I put it in her mouth but figured I should double check.

Should I give my dog more dewormer?
Q. My puppy has roundworms and I gave her dewormer. About 30 to 45 minutes later, she threw up twice. I'm worried about whether the medicine had time to take affect. Should I give her another dose or will this make her sick?

A. No you should never ever use human medicines for cats as they have different types of worms, apart from the fact that most humans medicine is poisonous to cats. Always get wormers from the vets for your kitten.

How long does it take for Droncit (dog dewormer) to work?
Q. This morning, I noticed tapeworms in my foster-puppy's stool. I got a couple of Droncit tabs from my vet and gave them to her this morning. How long should it take for the medication to start working? While I doubt the dead worms will come shooting wildly from her behind in a fantastic display of the medicine's effectiveness, I'd kinda like to know what to expect :D
Asked by allisoninge - Sun Nov 12 11:45:16 2006 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The worms will die within hours.Don't expect to see them, though.Although some dogs will pass them in their stool, others absorb them and so you won't necessarily see any in the dogs stool.Make sure to treat the pup for fleas as well or she will just get the tapeworms back,as they are spread by fleas.Good luck and bless you for fostering the puppy.

Nexmex dewormer - do you know how long it takes for your puppy to feel better after giving them the dewormer?
Q. medicine and if they should have any side effects with this medicine.
Asked by T M - Thu May 28 22:35:14 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Pyrantle Pamoate is an extremely safe dewormer. When overdosed, it generally just causes the animal to vomit. You may see parasites passed in feces in a matter of hours after dosing or even 24 hours later. As for "feeling better", it depends on what parasites your pup has, whether this is the appropriate dewormer and what health problems the parasites have caused (just competing for nutrients, anemia, GI irritation, etc).

Why is the kitty stinky like dead?
Q. Two nights ago we were driving home and had to stop in the middle of the road, because a little kitten was just sitting there in traffic. It made no attempt to flee from the cars, or from me when I got out and picked it up. The cat was riddled with flees, malnourished and bloated, and smelt like a dead animal in a garbage can. We went and bought some kitten flea medicine, dewormer, and soft cat food, and now the fleas are getting under control, her belly is no longer swollen, she is eating well, and has had two baths. However the stench of kitty has hardly diminished. Why does the kitty stink like a dead trash golem?
Asked by amatakir - Sun Sep 16 11:17:49 2007 - - 12 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It's only been 2 nights, the kitten probably was full of worms. Takes time before the wormer kills all (may need a repeat in few wks. too), therefore the little kitty is probably having very raunchy-smelling poopies and gas-galore,... I'm sure she's got a terrible tummy ache associated with all that's going on internally. Plus she probably doesn't know how to groom herself, especially while feel ill. The stench is prob. from her rotten stool and gas-passing. BTW, you are wonderful to have rescued the defenseless baby cat,... more people should be like you!

How does a dewormer work in dogs?
Q. My nine month old pup who is about sixty pounds has had visible and MOVING round worms in his vomit and stools. He went to the vet for it and was treated about a month and a half ago. Recently, we saw moving worms again in his stool so we bought D-Worm from the grocery store. He was given that medicine two days ago and today there were still many moving worms in his stool. With a dewormer, does it kill the worms while they are still inside of his or is it supposed to make him get rid of them while they are still alive? Also, how long does it take to work? Asked by Curious Katie - Sun Jan 10 11:56:44 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It's a poison that kills the worms. They then should be flushed out by his system- That is why if an animal is infested with worms (Usually a rescue case) they gradually kill the worms off by using lower doses, because to kill them all at once in a highly infested animal can and does result in the dead worms blocking up the intestine or something else and killing the animal. That's probably a loading dose- with cats and dogs, most people de-worm them when they see signs they have worms, but with animals like horses, you should deworm them every 3 or 4 months. Talk to your vet if you have concerns.

My bunny has roundworm, how do I treat it?
Q. I got a bunny the day after Easter, he was 6 months when we got him. Usually I let him roam around my room freely, but I have bunny-proofed my room so he can't eat any bad things or get electrocuted and stuff. On Friday, May 22, I was making sure he stayed on his toilet while he was going to the bathroom. When he was done and hopped off, I noticed some little dirty-white worms on his droppings. They were slowly squirming around on them. I didn't noticed anything strange at all about the bunny's behavoir. When I showed my mom the worms, she said they were roundworms. I'm glad I caught this early, but sadly the local pet store has no dewormer medicines for rabbits. It's Saturday night as I am typing this, and to me the little guy just looks… [cont.]

My puppy threw up her food?
Q. We gave our 11 week old German Shorthaired Pointer puppy her dewormer medicine last night around 6:00pm. We have given her this medice two times before without any problems. She had worms in her poop when she was 7 weeks old, but haven't seen any since then... we have just been giving the medicine every two weeks to make sure that they are completely gone. Last night she ate her food and about 20 minutes later she threw it all back up. Since then she hasn't eaten much food, and she is breathing a little funny. Every once in a while I will hear her make an odd gagging noise. The weirdest thing is, she is acting completely normal besides this? What could be wrong?

A. Sounds like you are on the right track. The only thing I would recom. to do make sure you are very diligent in cleaning up her stools in the yard (where ever she defecates) to prevent re-infestation of the worms. Puppies carry many worms and are also known for eating stools when they are young. She can re-infest herself by eating the stools so make sure you are cleaning up the stools immediately after she defecates.

Puppy after deworming medicine?
Q. So my puppy had worms/parassites in her tummy and we went to the vet and he gave her dewormer for 5 days, today is christmas and I wont be back in town until monday, she sleeps a lot a has gone back to having diarhea and hardly eating. Not sure what to do, keeping her hydrated, and trying to give her a tab of honey for her sugar not to go down. So any advice would be helpful. Called the vet and all the stinking advice they gave me was, bring her in. How can i bring her in when Im out of town? So no rude comments. She's lost a bit of weight too, but i thought she was just trying to clear up her tummy. So anyone who has had this problem, just advice would be appreciated. Tried soft food, and she just turns her nose on it.

After deworming my cat how long until her "pot belly" goes away?

He took her in because people were complaining and he thought she was pregnant. We already have 3 cats. So before he brought her home he took her to the town Vet Clinic and she was given her shots/dewormer/flea medicine and a look over. The Vet said she was probably pregnant and if so about 4 weeks along. He said he couldn't be for sure though without doing a sonogram. A. Profender takes longer to work than the oral dewormers, so it's not an overnight fix. One thing you need to do though is to disinfect all of the litter boxes, because they are a source of worms that can continually reinfect the cats while you're trying to kill the worms. Dump the boxes, clean them with bleach, and refill with fresh clean litter. This will get rid of any live worms and eggs "hiding" in the box. If her belly doesn't go down in another week or so, then I'd call the vet and ask for suggestions.

A. What brand of heartworm preventative is he on? A lot of them also control roundworms and other parasites...even tapeworms - depending on the active ingredients. Read the label for information. It is important to know what kind of worm you need to treat for, so if possible take the worm you found along with a stool sample to the vet for identification and proper treatment. I wouldn't panic...it can wait until monday.
