Will I see tapeworm's segments again after giving my kitten the first treatment? How about flea?
Q. I just found out that the 8 weeks kitten I adopted from shelter has tapeworm. I gave her the first oral treatment from vet. Will the tapeworm be killed right away? Will I see the rice-like worm segments again? Also, my kitten has tapeworm, does that mean she has flea too? I haven't seen any flea yet, but do I need to give her any flea control medicine?

A. Yes, she has fleas too. The most common way for a cat to get intestinal tape worms is from eating a FLEA (a host) that has eaten a tapeworm egg. The host animal has to be eaten. The most common way for a cat to (or human) to get tapeworms is to ingest the host (flea that has ingested a tapeworm egg)... not just the egg. The flea eating the egg activates the egg... which then hatches in your cat's intestine after the cat ingests the flea. Tape worm eggs do not activate to become larvae until they are eaten by a host, and then that larvae must again be swallowed to become a tape in the end recipient. Are there any home remedies to cure tapeworm in cats?
Q. i have 4 cats, and ive noticed that 2 of them have tapeworm segments... I can't afford to take them to the vet... are there any home remedies that wll work on them. Or any inexpensive tapeworm removel pills i can buy? Thanks so if i were to get the praziquantel tapeworm treatment for cats... it wont work? i have flea medication also. thanks to the few of you who are not being completely rude.

A. No, there are no "home remedies". But If you're absolutely sure it's tapeworm PetSmart sells Tradewinds Praziquantel which kills tapeworm. Give one tablet to each of your cats. But you'll need to buy two bottles as the $24.99 each bottles only come with three tabs. You also need to get these cats on a regular flea preventative so they don't end up with this happening again. Cats get tapeworm by ingesting a flea that contains the larvae. You should also be scooping the poop every time your cats go as these segments will come out in the poop and then can be stepped on and ingested when the cat licks its paw - creating a new tapeworm. Why do you have four cats if you can't afford to care for them? What will happen if they end up sick… [cont.]

How do you identify a tapeworm in stool?
Q. I found, what appeared to be a black ribbon, sort of flat and it looked like it was swimming around in the toilet. Is this possible? I thought tapeworm segments were smaller but this was seperate from the feces in the bowl. Im not sure if it was just something someone threw away before i used the bathroom or not, and im pretty scared.

A. All of the internal parasites that I'm aware of are white in color. Tapeworm segments are about the size of a kernel of rice. I can't say for certain that the black worm isn't a parasite because I'm not a doctor, but I find it unlikely. Do you have any health symptoms that would lead you to believe you might be infected with parasites? Possible symptoms could include diarrhea, constipation, cramps and an itchy butt. If you are symptom free, that makes it even more unlikely that you have any kind of a parasitic infection. If you're truly concerned, save the black worm and show it to your doctor.

A. Drontal is good stuff. I gave some to my dog who had tape. You'll see segments, in the poop. My vet recommended a follow up treatment, as well. Just to make sure they all got killed. Be sure to put your dog on flea preventative. Tapeworm is transmitted by fleas, and I'm reasonably sure that they can also be transmitted by ingesting segments (those little, rice-looking things). And like a lot of others said, pick up the poop as soon as you can. The best way to prevent recurrence is to put the dog on flea preventative. I know you probably already know this, and I'm not trying to be a wise ass, but make sure you wash your hands very thoroughly. Please also make sure that you have your dog on heart worm preventative. I keep mine… [cont.]

How long should it take Cestex to work to kill the tapeworm in my cat?
Q. I gave her a pill tonight, when should she be completely tapeworm free? How long until I quit being able to see the gross little white things that come out of her anal area? Thanks for the answers! I have been treating fleas w advantage for 3 months now since i got her, so we are assuming she has had it since before then (poor baby) bc she never goes outside. Also does anyone know the kinds of diseases the tapeworm eggs can cause in humans?
Asked by alohared - Tue Dec 4 19:55:36 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If you have treated the cat for the tapeworm infection and the fleas, you are home free. The egg sacks that you see on the cat's rear or in the stools are not infective to humans at that stage...a flea or mouse needs to nibble on them and ingest the eggs so that they can move thru their larval cycle to become infective...then you must ingest the flea or mouse yourself in order to set up a tapeworm infection in human.

Can you use tapeworm tabs for cats on dogs and have them be effective?
Q. I don't know for sure that my dogs have tapeworm, but they had fleas so I want to be sure they don't and treat them for it. If it's not possible to use these tabs on them, what should I use? I just always give my cats the tabs monthly cause they go outside and play with rodents. I now have my dogs on Front line plus and am hoping to stay flea free. Thanks everyone!

A. To prevent tapeworm infection: * Wash your hands with soap and water before eating or handling food and after using the toilet. * When traveling in areas where tapeworm is found, wash and cook all fruits and vegetables with safe water before eating. * Eliminate livestock exposure to tapeworm eggs by properly disposing of animal and human feces. * Thoroughly cook meat at temperatures of at least 150 F (66 C) to kill tapeworm eggs or larvae. * Freeze meat for at least 12 hours and fish for at least 24 hours to kill tapeworm eggs and larvae. * Avoid eating raw or undercooked pork, beef and fish. * Promptly treat dogs infected with tapeworm. A. I am going to assume you were asking a serious question and you are actually concerned. Well this is the bottom line, unless you have been eating raw uncooked meat and fish, drinking water in the wilderness, handling and ingesting animal feces, or eating yellow snow, it is extremely unlikely you have a tapeworm. Also there aren't really any symptoms from tapeworms a part from that some people experience weight loss, abdominal pain, lack of nutrient uptake, fatigue, and nausea. Some people get complications such as fever, and infections. Sometimes one might see eggs in the feces and sometimes part of the tapeworm may come out. If you excrete the tapeworm one must just pull it out. If not it must be diagnosed by the doctor who will give… [cont.]

Q. Also if there are signs that you have tapeworm whar are they?
Asked by mark.deguia - Mon Feb 25 22:05:34 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The more common ones come from beef tapeworm (Taenia saginata) and the pork tapeworm (Taenia solium); some of the less common ones are Diphyllobothrium latum (fish tapeworm), Hymenolepis nana (dwarf tapeworm) and Echinococcus granulosis (hydatid cyst disease). Each of the tapeworms has a lifecycle that starts at the egg stage. The parasite egg then hatches and goes through an immature form(s)called a larva(e) and finally becomes an adult that can mate with another adult to produce eggs. The parasites usually get into the human by being ingested (eaten) from contaminated food. Some of the tapeworm infections that occur in humans are caused by the adults, whereas others are caused by the larval form. The type of tapeworm infection will… [cont.]

A. Yes it is. During the next two weeks eggs/larvae will continue to hatch and mature to adulthood, so the second treatment is essential to eradicate those worms.

A. Please see a psychiatrist ASAP. Your problem is you want to eat as much as you want and lose weight. Tapeworms are not healthy - they will take in the nutrients YOU should be receiving from food. If you're THAT desperate, go on a diet and exercise like the rest of us have to.

A. The chances are extremely rare especially in North America. You have better chance of getting E.Coli than tapeworm. Many people eat rare meat almost every day and they are fine. If you are worried about getting tapeworm, don't be so paranoid. The chances are almost slim to none.

A. She should be fine if you gave her the right dose. I had found a tapeworm in my pets feces and medicated him immediately. He didn't even experience weight loss or listlessness. If she begins to lose weight, hair, or begins to sleep more than normal, take her back to your vet to do a check. Also, you should treat for fleas because that is how they are most commonly transmitted to household pets.

A. Tapeworms are a group of parasitic worms that live in the intestinal tracts of some animals. Tapeworms are segmented, with each segment capable of producing eggs. Eggs are dispersed by individual or groups of segments detaching and passing out with the stool. The groups of segments from the beef tapeworm are capable of movement and actively crawl out through the anus. Several different species of tapeworms can infect humans. What are the Symptoms of Tapeworm Infection? There are usually no symptoms. Tapeworm infection is usually recognized when the infected person passes segments of tapeworms in the stool.
