Will I see tapeworm's segments again after giving my kitten the first treatment? How about flea?
Q. I just found out that the 8 weeks kitten I adopted from shelter has tapeworm. I gave her the first oral treatment from vet. Will the tapeworm be killed right away? Will I see the rice-like worm segments again? Also, my kitten has tapeworm, does that mean she has flea too? I haven't seen any flea yet, but do I need to give her any flea control medicine?

A. Yes, she has fleas too. The most common way for a cat to get intestinal tape worms is from eating a FLEA (a host) that has eaten a tapeworm egg. The host animal has to be eaten. The most common way for a cat to (or human) to get tapeworms is to ingest the host (flea that has ingested a tapeworm egg)... not just the egg. The flea eating the egg activates the egg... which then hatches in your cat's intestine after the cat ingests the flea. Tape worm eggs do not activate to become larvae until they are eaten by a host, and then that larvae must again be swallowed to become a tape in the end recipient. How do i know that the tapeworm is gone from my kitten?
Q. I discovered that my cat had tapeworm after looking at his stool and noticing the segments. I had given him a medicine for the tapeworm. And now i dont know if it is completely gone. It has only been one dose and i dont know how long it should take to kick in. I also noticed a longer segment of the worm hanging out of his butt, and i want to know if that is all of it so i can stop giving him the medicine.

A. It often takes two treatments...you will just have to watch carefully and see. Keep him flea-free...that's where tapeworms come from!

A. Pretty much nothing. You'll have the same possible side-effects from the medicine whether you've got the worm or not. If you live in an area where parasites are common, it's likely you do have a worm. Whenever I travel from an area where human parasites are common, I de-worm, just as a precaution. It's not like the medicine has to kill something, so you die if it can't find a worm. If you de-worm, and there are no worms, then, well, pretty much nothing happens.

What are signs that a human might have a tapeworm in them besides weight loss ?
Q. One of my friend thinks that she has a tapeworm inside of her. What are all the signs that a human might have a tapeworm in them besides weight loss ? And what to do to get rid of them ?
Asked by Tabatha M - Fri Apr 18 19:58:34 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The signs of a tapeworm, besides weightloss, can include Nausea, weakness, fever and sometimes lumps or swelling when an infection is caused. Treatment for tapeworms is nearly always via oral medication such as praziquantel (Biltricide) or albendazole (Albenza) and a fairly short course should cure the problem.

What are the possibilities of contracting tapeworm from pets?
Q. 1. I have two kittens. 2. They have worms coming out of their bum. (Yes, gross.) 3. I'm very concerned. 4. But -thankfully- they've got an appointment with the vet on Tuesday. 5. What can I do to prevent contracting tapeworm from my pretty kitties? I... have no idea why I've numbered everything. HELP!

A. Are you sure they are tape worms? Cats can get lots of different types of worms... As you already know Kittens need to see a vet... And you getting worms, don't worry too much! Wash your hands lots... after you touch the kittens,,, or handle their business. and then wash them again. But if you happen to get worms ( HIGHLY unlikely!)... don't worry about that either. It's the same cure for you as your kittens a pill and it's gone.

Q. can a tapeworm be in your system forever and you just never know?
Asked by Julia - Wed Jun 30 18:09:29 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. tape worms become evident in your body after a period of about two months, because diarrhea will set in, then extreme fatigue, then inability to function properly, this is because the tape worm will keep ion lay new larvae and reproducing until a "carpet" of worms cover the lining of you intestines and stomach, they then steal nutrients from your food band deprive you of the proper nutrients to function efficiently, your body become More and more fatigued due to malnutrition, and you will usually die without the aid of medication, unlike some parasitic in infections the tape worm will continue to harm your body until the effects remain, it cannot have a symbiotic relationship with your body.

A. cats get tapeworms from one of two places. either by swallowing a flea or eating some sort of critter (like a rabbit or mouse). If you treat your cat for tapes and either of these two things happen after he has been treated he can easily get reinfected. so it is good to deworm your cat a couple times a year at least pending on how much he hunts. where i work it is not very expensive to deworm a cat. we just need to know how much the cat weights and alot of times we dont even make the people bring the cat in to see the dr. we just dispense the pills which usually cost about 5 bucks per pill and most cats never need more than 2 pills unless they are really fat. so you are looking at a range from 10 to 20 bucks id say at most. Are there any ways to cure/prevent tapeworm without seeing a doctor?
Q. any ways to cure possible tapeworm? If a long tangy piece of poop was passed out, do i still need to visit a doctor?
Asked by James L - Tue Oct 21 03:40:18 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Prevent tapeworm - easy enough. Don't eat food that is not well cooked, especially pork and beef. Cure - probably the doctor is a best choice. Prescription medicine for tapeworm is a much faster way to kill the worm than all the purposed home remedies, and it's proven to work. And tapeworm is not a long tangy piece of poop - it's a really, really long, white, thin, ribbon-like worm. It has hooks and suckers on its head so that it will not get passed out. Without a doctor's medicine to kill it, you probably will never pass it out. Maybe a few broken off segments, but that's it.

How would I go about getting a tapeworm?
Q. I heard they make you lose weight and I can eat as much as I want! I am desperate! (And please...don't list reasons why I should not get a tapeworm, I've already made up my mind and I'm willing to take the risk.)

A. Please see a psychiatrist ASAP. Your problem is you want to eat as much as you want and lose weight. Tapeworms are not healthy - they will take in the nutrients YOU should be receiving from food. If you're THAT desperate, go on a diet and exercise like the rest of us have to.

A. She should be fine if you gave her the right dose. I had found a tapeworm in my pets feces and medicated him immediately. He didn't even experience weight loss or listlessness. If she begins to lose weight, hair, or begins to sleep more than normal, take her back to your vet to do a check. Also, you should treat for fleas because that is how they are most commonly transmitted to household pets.

A. I would clear any upcoming surgery with the surgical team beforehand. The medications for the tapeworm could cause an unwanted interaction with the anesthesia.

How can I tell if my cat has a tapeworm?
Q. Without going to a vet (I don't have a lot of $) can you tell if a cat has a tapeworm? She eats a lot but she is really skinny. She's not bulimic or anything... at least I don't think so but if she is throwing up her food I haven't found it in the house. So if she does have a tapeworm, what can I do?

A. If you cat or dog has worms s/he will sit up on the floor with her back feet in front of her and drag her bottom on the floor. She is scratching that part of her anatomy that it's not polite to scratch in public. Next go to Petco and see what kind for worm med's they have. Dose her up, then dose her again in a week. vacuum the floors good and keep an eye on her. she should be fine. Some cats, like some people will never be chunky. It's not fair it just is.

how do you get rid of tapeworm in dogs?
Q. My puppy has had these worms now for about a month. I know it is tapeworm because when he gets out of the bed in the morning he has rice looking pieces in it. I have tried 1 pill but I am worried about giving it to him again soon because it has only been a few days since I used it. Does anyone think that it will hurt to give him another and do you think that might get rid of it.

A. The best thing that you can do is is take a stool sample to the vet and make sure that he doesn't have any other type of worms besides tapeworms. The vet can give you the proper dosage and and minster the correct amount of medication for your dog's size and weight.
